IRDAI has come up with new role of "Mentor Actuaries"

Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) has said insurers should appoint mentor, to increase the supply of appointed actuaries.

Irdai is approving the appointment of actuaries who are fellow members of the IAI (but do not qualify with the relevant experience and / or other requirements), subject to appointment of experienced actuary as mentor.
The regulator said that the Mentor should  guide these Appointed Actuaries on day-to-day basis.

"Currently it appears that the mentoring may not be happening as envisage," said IRDAI. According to the new norms, the Mentor should be a Fellow of Institute of Actuaries of India (IAI). However, fellow from any other Institutes wherein the IAI have mutual recognition agreement will also be considered provided the Actuary declares his/ her intention to obtain Fellowship of IAI within next one year.

The upper age limit for the mentor will be 75 years. The regulator has said that the mentor should have at least 20 years of experience in the Insurance field out of which at least 10 years of experience should be post-qualification.

Here, the purpose for appointment of mentor is to support younger Appointed Actuary who is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of India but does not comply with relevant experience/ other requirements  of the Appointed Actuary Regulations. The mentor will be applicable only when AA is full time employee of the company. If the company proposes to appoint AA on Consultancy basis, the Appointed Actuary himself / herself should be able to qualify all the criteria under Appointed Actuary Regulations

The good news is, Insurers have been advised to strengthen the Actuarial function by employing enough Actuarial students. This will help the AA in getting detailed analysis required for performing various statutory duties. In the process, the students will also get practical experience necessary for taking up more responsible positions within the Industry in future.

The above guidelines are effective immediately. The existing arrangements of Appointed Actuaries and Mentors not complying with these guidelines may continue till 30 June 2016. From 1 July 2016, all the appointments of Appointed Actuaries and their Mentors will be in compliance with these guidelines.

According to R M Vishakha, managing director and CEO of IndiaFirst Life Insurance, this arrangement will motivate more youngsters to come on board and gain practical experience.

As part of the actuarial course, the student should mandatorily work as an intern in the actuary department of a company. One has to complete the academic course and prepare for the professional qualification while working. This, say experts, puts a lot of pressure on the students and some of them eventually drop out.

Supporting the concept of mentoring, Saisrinivas Dhulipala, appointed actuary at Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance, said: “Young actuaries would require guidance in handling various issues related to products, solvency, and matters pertaining to liabilities and assets. Having an experienced actuary as mentor will help actuary aspirants to a great extent.”

Irdai approves the appointment of only senior actuaries having relevant experience of at least 10 years, said Sanjeeb Kumar, appointed actuary at Aviva Life Insurance and vice-president at Institute of Actuaries of India.
According to Kumar, there is a shortage of people with 10 years’ experience in life insurance and general insurance actuarial practice. He noted that the actuarial exams have high standards and the success rates are as very low.

According to the new norms, the ‘mentor’ should be a fellow of IAI. Fellows from any other institutes with which IAI has mutual recognition agreement will also be considered, provided the actuary declares his or her intention to obtain an IAI fellowship within one year.

“In a few years , we’ll have the needed number of senior actuaries once the recent qualifiers get the requisite work experience,” Kumar added.

Difference between being Partly Qualified Actuary and Qualified Actuary. Must Read.

It is a great misconception among students that you should start studying actuarial science and you get paid very well after clearing a few paper even if you don't complete the course. Yes, this is a great "misconception".

People start with actuarial science and I would say only 30%-40% (or may be even less) are determined to clear 15 papers and rest feel
"Let's start writing exam. I have heard it’s impossible to clear 15 exams but I will get paid very well even if I clear 9-10 papers or even just CT series and stop then". This is not true in reality.

Let me tell you the difference between what you think and what actually happens by explaining different cases of types of students.

This is how a “non-serious fresher”, rushing the profession these days, plan
  • I hear about actuaries from my peers/seniors/family
  • I google about it and only articles that I find says it is highest paid job and you need to be good at maths.
  • I scored well in maths in 10th and 12th, let’s start doing actuaries. I have no intention to complete all 15 papers and I will get a good job soon on clearing around 4-5 papers.
  • I start preparing for CT1 non-member/ACET
  •  Pass CT1/ACET. I will clear CT2, CT7 and CT9 and pass it in first attempt as they are very easy. I will get a good job with this many papers.
  • I will pass 4-5 more exams in 3-4 years and with full CT series my salary will escalate to Rs 20-30 lakhs per annum.
  • With experience I will get a new job in another company with even higher pay and my life is set. I will get lot of importance and huge salary in organisation as partly qualified actuary as its practically impossible to clear all 15 exam! My god, they are so tough!
What actually happens? #ReadCarefully

CASE 1 (Extremely non-serious)
·         I hear about actuaries from my peers/seniors/family
·         I google about it and only articles that I find says it is highest paid job and you need to be good at maths.
·         I scored well in maths in 10th and 12th, let’s start doing actuaries. I have no intention to complete all 15 papers and I will get a good job soon on clearing around 4-5 papers.
·         I start preparing for CT1 non-member/ACET
·         Pass CT1 in 2nd or 3rd attempt. Plan to give CT2, CT7, CT9 immediately.
·         Now I find out that these papers are not at all considered for jobs. #Tension
·         Start preparing for CT3 but then I see that few years back there was 0% result in CT3 in IAI exam. OMG, This is so tough, I am stuck! #FurtherTension
·         I Appear for CT3 multiple times, with no confidence, fail repeatedly
·         Drop Actuaries
·         Let’s Do CA/CFA/CS! #HappyEndingAtTheStartItself

CASE 2 (Intelligent but not determined enough to crack all 15 exams)
·         I hear about actuaries from my peers/seniors/family
·         I google about it and only articles that I find says it is highest paid job and you need to be good at maths.
·         I scored well in maths in 10th and 12th, let’s start doing actuaries. I have no intention to complete all 15 papers and I will get a good job soon on clearing around 4-5 papers.
·         I start preparing for CT1 non-member/ACET
·         I Pass. I take further advice and start preparation for other important subjects.
·         Appear for CT3, CT5, CT6 in net few attempts.
·         Start looking for a job. Get one. Wow! My salary is 35K p.m. and I am just 22 years now! Life is awesome! My hard work paid off! #HappiestSoFar
·         Start preparing for CT4. Gets demotivated, gives CT9 instead. Again start CT4 but then drop the plan to clear CT2 and CT7 first. By now salary is 50K p.m.
·         Start CT4 again, still not able to grasp. Have a look at CT8, find it even more terrible. #TooBadToStart
·         Now I feel a stage in my life has come where I am settled. I will get promotions based on my experience. I try but I am not able to cope up with exams due to time, determination, patience and confidence and seriousness constrains. #FeelingSafeAsOfNow

This is the case with majority candidates. What happens with these candidates after this?
-          Company/Boss is pressurizing to pass more exams and at the same time giving more work.
-          No great salary hikes now as before.
-          No promotions as some junior cleared full CT and he is now pushed ahead of me. (You should know that in corporate life, Degrees and recognitions are most important factors.)
-          Demotivation seeps in.
-          Feels Stuck. No Satisfaction. Lot of pressure.  #HopeIwasDeterminedFromStart #LetMeSitForExamAgainAndTry

CASE 3 (Intelligent and Determined to Do it)
·         I hear about actuaries from my peers/seniors/family
·         I google about it and only articles that I find says it is highest paid job and you need to be good at maths.
·         I scored well in maths in 10th and 12th. But let me research further. I find out its really difficult but my love for maths is infinite. I AM CONFIDENT THAT I WILL DO IT!
·         I Appears for ACET/CT1
·         Pass CT1. Takes Further guidance. Pass CT3, CT5, CT6. #Quick
·         Get a job within 4-5 months of good search.
·         Hardly anytime now with me along with my job but I am still very determined to DO IT anyhow given all the constraints.
·         I give up my weekends, evenings. #WorkingHard
·         I Clear CT Series in next 2 years.
·         Start CA1. Clears it. #Wow
·         Gets promotions and naturally I am placed on higher ranks then my colleagues who has 5 years more experience but hardly any papers. #BoostToDetermination
·         Picks up few ST papers. Clears it. #On7thSky
·         Clears SA series too. #Wow #ICanDoIt
·         By now I am 13-14 exams done and my age is around 30. Ohh God! The Journey was really long and now it’s just a matter of 1-2 more papers. My monthly salary is multiple lakhs by now but I am still craving for “Actuary” tag as still I am not getting that importance and happiness and of course salary that an Actuary begs. The one I had imagined before writing the first exam!
·         I push it hard. Clears all 15 exam in next few years.

·         Ah, I am an Actuary and suddenly everyone is looking at me with a very humble attitude, respect, grace etc. No one debates me, no one counters me as they feel no one can be more intelligent than me. And yes, it’s a common topic during lunch time of my juniors to discuss my salary and I love to keep it a secret. Haha. I am loving it!

What happens with you further?
Some Actuaries love India a lot and love to be here whatsoever and some get an offer letter from US or similar destination and fly immediately. I need not explain further how your life will be then. All this at the age of 30-32 or sometime even less if you start by the age of 20-21. Encouraging and rewarding enough but YOU NEED TO BE DETERMINED TO COMPLETE THE COURSE AND NOT LEAVE IT MIDWAY!

I hope you understood well how life turns around and plays with those students who enter the profession thinking its not important to clear all 15 papers and life will still be set. Yes, you might be earning well without completing all 15 but then comes a loop and career is stuck. There is a huge and amazing turn around in your life when you move on from 14th paper to 15th paper. It’s the 15th exam that matters the most.

In very simple words,
Candidate with 15 papers = ACTUARY
Candidate with less then 15 papers = NOT AN ACTUARY

It’s very easy to enter this profession but very challenging to get through. There is no escape in between! If you enter, make sure you survive till the end!

Thank You for reading.

Actuarial Jobs - Myths Busted

"Jobs"- this is definitely something for which students in India pursue any specialised professional course like Actuarial Science or any other. Actuaries is considered to be a very highly paid job and students are definitely attracted to this profession because of great pay scales. But once they start giving exams some senior peers start scaring them with stories of market being stagnant and no jobs available in the market relating to Actuarial Science. This is anything but True.

It's general perception that Actuaries are meant for Insurance industry only! This is not valid in today's time.

What I think is Actuaries are meant to work in any field that involves risk, working of statistics, analytics, modelling, predictions etc. There is nothing like "Conventional" field for Actuaries but people do say that insurance is conventional and rest all are non conventional field of work. I strongly oppose this.

There are 55 insurance companies in India if one company recruit 10 people in actuarial team, whole industry will require on only 550 Actuaries.. So where will the rest of people go? Because of this situation people have started working in consultancy. So is it a bad thing? Not at all.. There is a huge scope for Actuaries in consultancy services. There are hardly any Actuaries in middle East , major part of Asia, and many other countries. But even these countries have insurance and other risky business in their market and hence require Actuaries. So from where do they get actuarial services? Obviously they outsource it to India or Australia (UK and US being very expensive). So isn't there a good scope?

Since 2013, Employment benefits (like gratuity, leave encashment, post retirement medical benefits, pension funds etc) liability valuation is done compulsorily by Actuaries as per new regulations. There are huge no. of companies who get this valuation done. If you charge around 8-10K to one company with less than 150 employee and higher amount accordingly to companies with more employees. Just imagine how much business you will get if you get good number of companies from market with least competition in valuers? Isn't it encouraging?

Actuaries in UK and US charge exorbitantly and hence some work is outsourced to India these day, creating ample opportunities here in our country.

You must have also heard of analytics? Some or most of my friends in this field say that analytics is non Actuarial may be they are true but I think against this. We should be open to working in any field that will require application of our knowledge. Be it in any department. Breaking the law, one of my friend accepted a job offer from one bank in analytics and business intelligence department. The person in charge in that bank was specifically looking for person with ct3 cleared as he thinks actuarial student can work better than someone with Bsc in Statistics. And that's indeed true. I congratulate him for starting a new trend in India. Though some "intelligent" people call it non actuarial, I hardly feel the same. I Would like them to define what is "actuarial job"?

Actuaries all over the world work in various fields like Risk Management, consultancy, Analytics, insurance, academics, valuation etc. They are not specific to insurance these days. Be open to all the fields and to what ever option that come to you. Just make sure it requires application of your actuarial concepts knowledge. There is no fixed definition of what makes it a "actuarial job".

What are packages likes? Fresh Graduate with few papers cleared get anywhere between Rs 3lakh to Rs 8lakhs based on company and candidate. It's a myth that you get millions immediately. Your salaries of course will increase exponentially with more experience and more actuarial papers in your kitty. If you become qualified Actuary your salary can be between Rs 4-8 millions or even more, again based on your own competence!

When is the right time to start working ? As soon as possible after clearing 1-3 papers. The more you are experienced while you study for exams, the more better you understand the concepts!

This is a great profession which say "earn while you learn"

Also we are proud to be a part of profession with 0% unemployment. There is not even one fellow actuary who is unemployed. Isn't it great?

Is there a huge competition at freshers level? Certainly Yes. But there are two things..

1. Competition is always good

2. Everyone is rushing to only specific employers like insurance, a few consultancy and KPOs. There are lot of other fields where are not approached and hence creates too much rush.

Also think why the company will recruit you. By clearing 2 exams you feel on the top of world. You should remain grounded and try to understand how much knowledge do you actually possess. You need to have basic software skills and your communication should also be excellent. Without these two, you will become a liability for the company. Do remember companies hire you not because they are generous enough to create jobs, but because they want to get their work done. If you don't have required aptitude then how can you expect to get hired? You need to be visibly different and smart.

So from here stop crying and asking if there are no jobs and do something to make yourself smart enough to sustain the competition. I hope you knew even before entering the profession that life is not going to be easy any more.

Also, try to work to improvise our profession. It really need good volunteers.

At the end as I always say, never seek to get jobs, always seek CREATE JOBS. BE AN ENTREPRENEUR!

CT7 EXAM TIPS

- Question paper will have 30 Multiple Choice Question of 1.5 marks each. So Multiple choice question will form 45 marks of your paper, If you get them right then you can crack the paper easily. These questions are generally not straight forward but if you know the concept well then it will be easy for you. So as you read the text of course notes don't just memorize it, understand the concept being explained.

- While attempting MCQs just write the correct answer. Do not give reasons for your answer.

- Further Question paper will have 7-10 medium or long Practical or theory question. Do not write self made stories in theory. Your answers should be to the point. Keep it precise and factual. Draw Diagrams wherever required.

- Students get ample time to complete this paper. Still it is advisable to attempt theory and practical. questions first and then go for multiple choice question.

- All the chapter are equally important as Multiple choice question can be from any chapter and loosing marks on multiple choice questions is not affordable. First 2 sections are easy and more scoring. Last two sections are important and should be given more time as there might be tricky questions asked from these sections.

- Thoroughly Solve Question Bank and X series along with past exam papers (especially from 2009-2013). Don't just go through, sit and write the papers and try to memorize it. Questions may be repeated sometimes.

- CT7 exam in India is comparatively easier then other CT exams.

You may ask any specific question in comments section.

These are personal observation, there is no golden rule in Actuarial Exams. if you find it helpful, kindly share. Good luck!

CT3 EXAM TIPS

- Don't Omit any part but give more stress on those chapter which constitute major part of 100 marks exam. At least one medium or big question is expected from chapter 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14. Chapter 6-7 and 11-12 may have a combined question. Question from chapter 13 and 14 are generally scoring.

- Small question (2-5 marks) may add up to at least 30-35 marks.

- Most of the formulas are available in tables, you just need to know where and how to apply those.

- Thoroughly Solve Question Bank and X series along with past exam papers (minimum past 5 years paper). Don't just go through, sit and solve them even if you feel it is easy, or else you may go blank during exam due to lack of practice.

- Revision notes will be helpful too.

- Question will always not be straight forward, so if you encounter any tricky question in past papers kindly try to understand the methodology used to solve such questions. At least 20 marks will be tricky.

- As soon as you receive the question paper, go through it and try to attempt those questions first which you are good at. Paper is generally lengthy making it difficult to complete in 3 hours time. Preferably attempt small question later.

- Get used to Actuarial Tables. Many formulas are in available in actuarial table.

- If you attempt more than 80 marks of paper confidently then you have a good chances of passing. Don't get demotivated if you can't complete full paper. Manage time effectively. Remember 1 mark = 1.8 Minute of exam time!

Type of question generally vary a lot in Indian CT3 Exam. Kindly solve more and more past papers to increase your chances of passing.

You may ask any specific question in comments section.

These are personal observation, there is no golden rule in Actuarial Exams. if you find it helpful, kindly share. Good luck!

CT2 EXAM TIPS

- Question paper will have 10 Multiple Choice Question of 2 marks each. These questions are generally not straight forward but if you know the concept well then it will be easy for you. So as you read the text of course notes don't just memorize it, understand the concept being explained.
- Further Question paper will have 2 long question of 15-20 marks each. One of them will probably on construction accounts and another might be on ratios of capital project appraisal.
- Rest will be medium size question comprising of small sums or theory questions.
- Students get ample time to complete the paper. Still it is advisable to solve full length questions first and then go for short question.
- Most important chapters - Section 1 full(Theory),chapter 9 & 10(Sums), chapter 12(Sums), Section 4 full(Theory as well as sums).
These are important but not sufficient. Since we have multiple choice question in exam, they can be from any chapter.
- Thoroughly Solve Question Bank and X series along with past exam papers (minimum past 5 years paper). Don't just go through, sit and solve them even if you feel it is easy, or else you may go blank during exam due to lack of practice.

Note
- Before you write your exam, make it clear in your mind that you can't simply pass the exam by doing only book work, your concepts should be pretty clear.
- Be precise in what you write. Don't write too long for questions that carry less marks or don't write too less for questions that carry good marks.
- Write in legitimate hand writing.
- Please remember 1 marks = 1.8 minutes of exam time. Keep good speed. Write longer questions first as they are more scoring. Small questions might be some times tricky and may waste your time.

You may ask any specific question in comments section.

These are personal observation, there is no golden rule in Actuarial Exams. if you find it helpful, kindly share. Good luck!

THANK YOU!
